Chromosomes carry the genes that determines whether a baby is a boy or a girl. 

Chromosomes come in different lengths.   Cells contain two sets of chromosomes, one set from each parent.  The chromosomes are sorted during reproduction.  You have 23 pairs of somatic chromosomes (23 individual ones from your mother and 23 individual ones from your father), including the sex chromosomes that determine if you are a boy or a girl.
